Newborn Sessions…

When to schedule…

The best time for your infant’s very first photography session is in his or her first 2 weeks.  While we often have last minute openings, it’s important to try and schedule your newborn session before baby arrives.  Also, falling in love with your newborn is going to consume you from the moment s/he arrives…having your session on the books beforehand will give you one less thing to think about while you’re snuggling your sweet new bundle!

What to wear…

As you’ll notice while browsing through my photos, I prefer to photograph newborns in their birthday suit.  This allows the photographs to be completely about your baby; his flaky new skin, his perfect little rolls, his tiny 10 toes…. We want to capture and remember it all!  Most clothes won’t fit a brand new baby properly, which can be distracting and take away from the images.  I’m always careful to photograph your infant tastefully, but if you have concerns, please let me know and we can use form-fitting wraps and diaper covers throughout the session.

If we’re including parents and/or siblings in some of the photos, I always recommend choosing the simplest shirts, blouses, or dresses. Try to avoid stripes or other patterns that will take the focus from baby.  I also recommend keeping the colors neutral: blacks, grays, browns, creams and whites work best.  Also, keep in mind that the studio will be warm.  If your session takes place in the colder months, you’ll want to dress in layers so that you can take some off to keep cool and comfortable throughout the session.

What to expect…

Your newborn photography session will last anywhere from 2-4 hours.  Your infant will be the most important person in the studio!  We’ll take breaks as needed for feedings, soothing, and cuddling.  Some infants will also require extra time at the studio just to get their awake time out of their system so that they’re good and sleepy for photos.

Because your newborn will be diaper-free for the majority of the session, it is very possible that she will relieve herself during the shoot.  This is very common and nothing to worry about.  I have plenty of supplies on hand for cleaning up messes and everything that goes on baby, comes home with me to be laundered after your session.
